  • ANU1 - Mobilising Research
The International Alliance of Research Universities (IARU)

ANU1 - Mobilising Research

26 June 2017 – 14 July 2017
Hosted by Australian National University

Mobilising Research examines the role of research for the advancement of society. This intensive, interdisciplinary course will equip students to put research into action and reset the research agenda towards the advancement of the global public good.

Students are exposed to how scholarly inquiry is conducted in a range of disciplines outside their own through interactive sessions and site visits to leading research facilities on campus. The exposure to different mindsets, approaches, and cultural norms will challenge students to see how research can be used to make positive change.

Students will explore a complex global problem of their choosing, and understand how research can be used to navigate and shape public opinion about the issue.

Field Trip

ANU1-Kioloa
ANU South Coast campus - Kioloa

The course will include a field trip to the ANU Kioloa Campus on the South Coast. The trip is an opportunity to engage in interactive activities in a relaxed environment, as well as to explore local indigenous culture and environmental management and the beautiful beaches and wildlife of the NSW south coast. https://youtu.be/GJD-NSMp5rs.

Students will travel by bus from Canberra to Kioloa and the trip takes approximately 3 hours.

Target Audience & Prerequisites

This course is aimed at bachelor students from all disciplines who are considering further studies in graduate-level research.

Prerequisites

Students are welcome from all disciplines but should have demonstrated interest in research during their studies.

Delivery Method & Learning Outcomes

Mobilising Research will examine the role of research for the advancement of society. Students will be exposed to how scholarly inquiry is conducted in a range of disciplines outside their own course of study through interactive discussions with academics and policy-makers, and site visits to leading research facilities on campus. This is an ideal opportunity for students to be exposed to the world-leading research being undertaken at the ANU and to build connections with international academics.

Course topics:

Students will be treated as part of the research community at ANU. We will investigate the broader questions around research from multiple perspectives. Topics include:

  • the role of research in shaping the public good;
  • scholarship in and between the disciplines;
  • ownership of knowledge for the public good;
  • cultural perspectives on research in a globalised world;
  • organisational implementation of research;
  • mobilisation of research for the public good.

Delivery method:

Students will prepare for the course with a partner in the weeks leading up to the course. The preparation will be different for each partnership. This will work towards the ‘Activity’ facilitation in the first week.

There are no lectures in this course. Students will have introductory workshops, meet with academics, and be involved in the delivery of their own workshops about an aspect of research.

Morning and afternoon sessions will run Monday to Thursday, with additional sessions to attend relevant public events and research training workshops.

Learning outcomes:

This course aims to expand participants’ understanding of and confidence in applying:

LO1: Methods for negotiating, identifying and articulating societal issues and problems so that they become expressed in forms that can benefit from the application of research.

LO2: Disciplinary characteristics of research, and methods for integrating research across disciplinary edges.

LO3: Methods for implementing and evaluating research-based interventions and contributions that address societal problems.

Assessment

Details about the size and scope of the assessment will be negotiated with students during the first days of the course. The assessment will be made up of three components, with the following suggested weightings:

Activity co-facilitations - 25%
Group position paper - 25%
Individual learning portfolio and 3-minute talk - 50%

Credit equivalent at host university & contact hours

Mobilising Research is a high intensity course. It is equivalent to a full semester-length course but conducted over just three weeks.

The course is worth 6 units at ANU (ANU full time students take 24 units per semester). As the course is run in intensive mode, classes will be scheduled for morning and afternoon sessions, Mondays through Thursdays.

All students should expect approximately 16 hours of contact per week, made up of face-to-face sessions and site visits. Students will also need to commit to eight hours of independent learning or group project work per week.

Additionally, students are asked to prepare for the course ahead of time by allocated reading and resources with a partner before the course.

Students will also be invited to engage in ANU public lectures outside of class time, typically in the evenings.
