The International Alliance of Research Universities (IARU)

IARU Members

IARU members are leading research universities that share a global vision, similar values and a commitment to educating future world leaders.

On 14 January 2006, the 10 founding IARU members signed a memorandum of understanding to engage in various activities including summer internships, research collaborations, benchmarking best practices and identifying shared or common positions on key public issues. On January 2016 the Alliance extended the partnership and welcomed the University of Cape Town as a new member.

As the Alliance is small in nature, the members share a close-knit relationship.

ANU scholars lead global thinking on issues of national and international significance, and our students go on to become leaders in their home countries and on the world stage. The University’s reputation attracts people from around the world, with one third of our students and many staff coming from overseas. More than half our students are studying at postgraduate level, and all our students enjoy small class sizes and continual access to the best scholars in their field.

ANU is located at the heart of the national capital, alongside foreign missions, the Australian Parliament, other national institutions, research organisations, and offices of government. With close to 5,000 accommodation places on campus, ANU offers a student residential experience like no other.

  • Founded in 1829, the University of Cape Town (UCT) has a proud tradition of academic excellence, consistently ranked as the leading university in Africa (QS, THE, Shanghai-JT rankings). UCT has 28,000 students, a third of whom are postgraduates and a fifth from other countries. UCT aims to be the premier academic meeting point between Africa and the rest of the world.

The university’s expertise in and commitment to developing African-centred knowledge attracts staff and students from over 100 countries in Africa and the rest of the world. UCT has built strong partnerships and exchange agreements with leading African and international institutions that further enrich the academic, social and cultural diversity of our campus.

UCT’s location at the tip of the African continent has positioned the university as a key generator for research on sub-Sahara Africa. One such example is the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) – an international enterprise to build the largest and most sensitive radio telescope in the world – which has enabled UCT to become a hub for astronomy and astrophysics research in Africa. In its drive to expand and enhance its contribution to Africa’s development challenges and indigenous knowledge base, UCT provides focused support to areas of research that address these critical challenges, such as the African Climate and Development and the Poverty and Inequality initiatives.

The university is a world leader in research into HIV and tuberculosis and our Health Sciences Faculty is frequently ranked in the top 50 in the world; for two years in a row, UCT has received more funding from the National Institutes of Health than any other research institution outside the USA.

UCT actively explores ways in which the institution can contribute to a more equal and economically sustainable society in post-apartheid South Africa. We focus on producing graduates who are not only well-educated, but also mindful of the responsibilities of democratic citizenship.
