Aging, Longevity and Health

International Healthy Aging Network

The International Healthy Aging Network (iHAN) is part of the IARU ALH initiative. Researchers of iHAN collaborate on the study of molecular and cognitive biomarkers of healthy aging and age-related diseases, including Type 2 diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease, using in vivo methods of neuroimaging, particularly positron emission tomography (PET).

Research Focus

Research at iHAN is based upon three fundamental hypotheses, each of which relates to the substantial variation in overall energy consumption in the brain:

  1. That partial uncoupling of mitochondrial function and the resulting differences in individual energy production result in significant inter-individual differences in RONS (reactive oxygen and nitrogen species), damage and repair processes and that these differences contribute directly to variations in aging.
  2. That there is a direct relationship between inter-individual differences in brain energy utilization, brain morphology and/or activity.
  3. That there is a direct relationship between energy consumption in the brain and the aging process that can be established by aligning population-based observation of aging processes with measures associated with brain energy consumption.

iHAN Committee

The iHAN organization committee formally met for the first time in 2009 to initiate collaboration between researchers in Denmark, Singapore and Australia, which expanded to include researchers from other universities. The Network meets 4 times a year, often in groups of the individual nodes.

Researchers of iHAN include members from:

  • University of California, Berkeley, US
  • Yale University, US
  • Johns Hopkins University, US
  • University of Queensland, Australia
  • Universiteit van Stellenbosch, South Africa
  • McGill University, Canada
  • University of British Columbia, Canada
  • Aarhus University, Denmark
  • University of Copenhagen, Denmark
  • University of Oslo, Norway

In 2015, the researchers of iHAN created three affiliated nodes, including:

  • Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine, St. Kitts, West Indies
  • Tabriz University of Medical Sciences, Iran
  • Uganda National Research Health Organization, UNRHO, Uganda

Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine and Tabriz University of Medical Sciences are affiliated with the University of Copenhagen and UNRHO is affiliated with the University of Oslo.

Walkability - mobility and social relations among the elderly

The joint IARU ALH research project entitled Walkability involves:

  • Oxford University (Oxford Institute of Population Ageing)
  • University of Copenhagen (Center for Healthy Aging)
  • Helen Hamlyn Center for Design at the Royal College of Art

The goal of “Walkability” is to investigate whether the existence of perceived community assets and/or specific characteristics of the built environment, including streetscape design, and/or characteristics of the social environment influence the propensity of older adults to walk, exercise and/or practice other healthy behaviors.

The project group meets several times a year and are working on proposals for future funding.

Aging, Longevity and Health

The IARU Aging, Longevity & Health initiative is one of the earliest joint research initiatives formed by the Alliance in 2006, led by the University of Copenhagen with the Center for Healthy Aging (CEHA) as a key actor.

The group examines this 21st century issue with a multidisciplinary approach. The initiative encompasses biological, psycho-social, cultural and public health policy issues arising from changing human population age demographics and the global human longevity transition.

ALH Research Focus

The Aging Longevity and Health research focus areas are:

  • Biology of Aging
  • Cohorts, Cognition and the Brain
  • Changing Demographic, Economic, Social and Physical Environments and Healthy Aging
  • Technology and Aging

ALH Activities

The activities arranged by the ALH network include: Scientific conferences, symposia, networking meetings and graduate student conferences.

ALH Steering Group

Since 2014, an IARU ALH Steering Group has been heading the initiative. The Steering Group intends to meet once per year. The members are (as of February 2022):

  • Prof. Lene Juel Rasmussen, University of Copenhagen
  • Prof. Nicolas Cherbuin, Australian National University
  • Dr. Benedikt Helgason, ETH Zürich
  • Prof. Angelique Chan, National University of Singapore
  • Prof. Hiroko Akiyama, The University of Tokyo
  • Dr. Ikuko Sugawara, The University of Tokyo
  • Dr. Louise Lafortune, University of Cambridge
  • Prof. Sarah Harper, University of Oxford
  • Prof. David Lindeman, University of California, Berkeley
  • Prof. Xiaoying Zheng, Peking University
  • Dr. Sebastiana Kalula, University of Cape Town

The mission of the Steering Group is: to facilitate exchange of ideas and collaborative interdisciplinary research projects on human aging among IARU ALH researchers at IARU member universities
