Theories about Critical Security Studies (Aberystwyth), securitization (Copenhagen) and the security field (Paris) emerged mostly in Europe during the 1990s and the 2000s but have increasingly been adopted and adapted by scholars from all other regions of the world. Simultaneously, the concept of "human security" gained ground especially in UN and UNDP related circles and in policy oriented research. All theories have been exposed to extended critical examinations and several rounds of improvements, and especially the theory of securitization has been widely adopted as a framework for analysis in empirical studies across the globe and in more or less all thematic corners of the security problématique. With the theory of securitization at the centre of the course but covering the other "schools" as well, this GSP course will provide participants with the theoretical tools for examining the political stakes and dynamics involved when new issue areas (like climate change, religious radicalism, or failed states) are addressed as "security issues": who tries to move issues onto the security agenda with what purposes and what side effects, how are the management of these issues affected by being "securitized", how does this vary globally between regions and types of societies, and how do processes of securitization and de-securitization influence the capacity of societies to manage new global challenges? Particular attention will be paid to the role of different kinds of scientific work in handling these challenges, ranging from technical expertise in a given issue over policy research closer to decision-makers to meta-reflections and problematizations in other corners of academe including philosophy, law and political science.

On the basis of carefully selected readings – distributed well ahead of the course – and teaching by scholars who have been pivotal in developing the relevant theories, the course will be ambitiously aimed at engaging students at the research frontier, and with the help of issue specialists, they will be guided towards both application of the theories and further rethinking. It is for this reason, and the expectation of a considerable effort by participants, that the course is calculated as 10 ECTS.

Excursions will be made to the Danish Meteorological Institute, Danish Institute of International Studies, Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, possibly the Rehabilitation and Research Centre for Torture Victims and the Danish Defense Intelligence Service.

3rd year undergraduate and 1st year graduate

Approximately half the sessions will be devoted to the literature critically examining and improving on the theories, while the other half will be oriented to specific kinds of "new threats" and involve both practitioners and academics specialized in these areas. The two kinds of days will be interlaced to ensure a dynamic experience for the participants. The theory oriented part will be mostly structured around presentations by the course leader (and other teachers) and group discussions by participants. The thematic parts will be based on lectures from specialists and short presentations by participants to the class. This course is worth 10 ETCS credits.

This Summer Program will be co-taught by the course leader (Professor Ole Wæver) and faculty from the departments of political science, law, anthropology, geography, and religious studies as well as the Danish Meteorological Institute, Danish Institute of International Studies, Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, possibly the Rehabilitation and Research Center for Torture Victims and the Danish Defense Intelligence Service.

One oral presentation (20%), participation in class activities/discussion (20%) and one 5,000 word essay completed within 4 weeks after the course (60%).

The main topic of the course is Søren Kierkegaard's witty and deeply earnest exploration of the problem of self identity. Beginning with the breakdown of culture-specific ethnic and religious categories that have traditionally defined the self, the course treats Kierkegaard's scathing critique of religious culture and politics, his view that religious demands can conflict with seemingly universal ethical duties, and his assertion that the look of the Other is a defining factor in self-identity.

Professor George Pattison from the University of Oxford was a guest instructor in the 2010 summer program.  He and Assistant Professor David Possen of Yale University will be invited to participate the coming summer.  Our courses usually feature at least one visiting lecturer from the IARU network.

This is the second year that the University of Copenhagen is repeating this course. The course is repeated due as it has received good student evaluation and strong academic content.

Towards the beginning of the course, students will enjoy a sponsored weekend bike trip to Gilleleje, Tisvilde, Gribskov and Søborgsø to see some of the sites Kierkegaard incorporates into his authorship. We will read passages from Kierkegaard at the various sites.

The primary aim of the weekend tour is to let the students get to know each other well. Their familiarity with each other beyond the classroom will encourage students to ask questions, and openly discuss and debate Kierkegaard's thoughts.

This course is open to 3rd or 4th year undergraduate and 1st year graduate.

In general, class will take the form of a lecture followed by a dialogue between instructor and the students. Readings will be assigned for each class, and the discussion led by the instructor will focus on this reading. Comments and critical questions from students are highly encouraged. We will meet 3 times a week, for 3 hours at a time (11 class sessions altogether, including field studies). This course is worth 15 ECTS credits. Participants may choose to complete either a BA or MA level exam.

BA requirements:

• Active class attendance (75 % attendance as documented in the attendance record).
• Familiarity with a reading list (primary and secondary literature) of 800-1000 pages.
• A written paper of 8-10 pages with 1.5 line spacing (formally, 2400 characters per page, including spaces), based on 400-500 pages of primary literature. The paper will receive a letter grade, evaluated by an internal grader.

MA requirements:

• Active class attendance (75 % attendance as documented in the attendance record).
• Familiarity with a reading list (primary and secondary literature) of 1,200-1,500 pages.
• A written paper of 12-15 pages with 1.5 line spacing (formally, 2400 characters per page, including spaces), based on 500-750 pages of literature. The paper will receive a letter grade, evaluated by an internal grader.

The course is intense and combines lectures and project work. The students will learn the basic research concepts and principles in diverse disciplines including humanities, social science, epidemiology, neurology, physiology, and molecular biology from the lectures. The students will then form different groups (3-4 students per group) during the course, and carry out a research project under the supervision of tutors from CEHA programs. This course is aimed at students who have gained a first bachelor level degree and are interested in all aspects of aging research. Students from all fields are welcome to apply.

This course is open to Master students and above.  Students who have obtained a bachelor degree from any discipline, have interests in ageing research, and have good English skills are welcome to apply.  The applicants are encouraged to write an essay about their interests and plans for their future studies as part of their application.  A few fellowships will be given to outstanding applicants to cover their travel and accommodation expenses.

The course will be divided into two parts: lectures in the first 3 days and practical course in the following 11 days. The lectures will cover the basic knowledge in different aging research fields including: humanities, social science, epidemiology, neurology, physiology, and molecular biology.

On the fourth day, introduction will be given to several interdisciplinary research projects by researchers from CEHA. These projects are examples of the research that contains shared interests across different areas of ageing research. The aim is to give students the opportunity to learn and use research methods from other disciplines, and they can develop those projects within the practical course. The topics of projects include: fatigue, memory, mobility, adaptability, preventive medicine, and mechanism of aging. On the following 10 days, the students will form groups and choose one of the practical projects as their course project. Each student group will carry out the research project under supervision from CEHA researchers. At the end of the course, they will write an essay about their findings/conclusions and present their reports to the class. The students will be closely followed by the CEHA researchers and their performance will be evaluated at the end of the course.

This 4-week program for up to 20 GSP students is comprised of the following elements:

• 8 seminar meetings of the GSP group, focusing on major challenges for the twenty-first century. Proposed topics will be drawn from the following range: government, global economy, nationalism, climate change, healthcare, sustainability, transport, universities for the 21st century, and medical advances.
• 4 papers to be written on subjects informed by plenary lecture attendance (primarily, but not exclusively, History, Literature or International Relations).
• Weekly Cambridge-style supervision sessions (1 hour) for individuals or pairs of students, during which their papers are reviewed and discussed.
• 2 -3 daily plenary lectures from the International Summer School program:

  • Literature: Relationships & rivalries
  • Science: Impact & responsibility
  • History: War & peace
  • Art History: Art, light & space
• Research time in the University Library (a Copyright Library) and access to other faculty libraries.
• Weekly feedback sessions with the Course Director.

Plenary lectures are given by eminent scholars from a wide spectrum of specialist fields, and include question and answer sessions after each talk. Lecture topics range from the latest interpretation of historical events and works of literature to cutting-edge scientific discoveries. For these plenary lectures, the GSP students will be in the company of participants in the International Summer Schools, affording the group a truly global experience.

Tapping in to the full range of subjects on offer will allow GSP students with widely differing fields of interest to benefit from the experience, tailoring - as far as possible - a program to their own personal areas of interest. Participants will be encouraged to make connections between writings, events, discoveries and disciplines in order to understand how each has influenced the shaping of our world until now, and to establish a base on which predictions for our future world can be made.

The morning and evening plenary lecture programs offer a range of over one hundred talks, covering a vast number of topics. Applicants will be sent final details of speakers (and can access the program lists as they develop on the web), and precise timings so that options can be selected in advance; applicants will be asked to indicate their preferred subject area(s). Selected candidates will be required to submit detailed proposals for the supervision field of study, so that supervisors can be selected and allocated before the start of the program. Supervisions will normally be conducted by experienced University/College lecturers who are also course directors on the International Summer Schools.

GSP students will be welcome to join the evening lecture and social program, and to participate in the optional weekend excursions, giving them a chance to meet with representatives of some 50 other nationalities. Other activities will be arranged just for the GSP group.

Students in penultimate year of undergraduate course, occasionally first year graduate students, all disciplines, but related to program provision: Literature, History, Science, Art History, Interdisciplinary.

Students should be open to learning in disciplines beyond their immediate field of study, and be extremely fluent in English: discussion of topics and clear expression of ideas will be essential parts of the program. Students in their third or final year of study are likely to benefit most, but exceptionally second year undergraduates will be considered.

Attendance is required at 2-3 lectures per weekday, and at 2 discussion group meetings per week. Central to the experience is the supervision meeting per week (2-3 students with their supervisor) and 1 feedback meeting per week. Students submit 1 paper each week in advance of the supervision: submission of weekly papers and discussion of written work at the supervision sessions ensures academic rigor. This program format - a combination of self-directed research, lectures, discussions and supervisions - also largely mirrors the experience of regular Cambridge undergraduates who, in many subjects, are not required to attend set "classes" and can elect to hear particular lectures on topics within and beyond their immediate field of study. The 4 weeks of study will be very intensive. The program affords some 50 contact hours of lectures, 8 hours of supervision and 12 hours of discussion, and therefore a total of some 70 contact hours over the 4 weeks, excluding additional research and self-directed study time.

Assessment will be based on contributions to supervisions and on written papers. Oral feedback on papers will form part of the supervision, but students will also receive narrative reports on submitted papers. 4 papers (normally 2,000-3,000 words each) will be graded on a percentage scale (where 40% is pass and 70% is A+) and awarded a Cambridge class mark. Students and institutions will be provided with a suggested letter-grade translation scale. Precise grades are not given out during the supervisions. Grades can be adjusted marginally (normally, by 0%-5% on the basis of performance in supervisions. The final grade awarded is an average of the 3 highest-scoring papers.

IARU GSP students will be housed alongside other members of the International Summer Schools, most probably in St. Michael's Court, part of Gonville and Caius College.
