News from IARU

The Alliance is starting the New Year with the much-anticipated launch of 21 Global Summer Program (GSP) courses on 9 January. The success of this initiative – which involves the collective efforts of ten partners in designing and coordinating these courses – reaffirms the Alliance's commitment to bringing innovations in teaching and learning that is truly global in scope, transcending disciplinary, cultural and geographical boundaries. It continues to create opportunities for students from member universities to gain cross-cultural as well as cross-disciplinary exposure and experiences, and for faculty and staff to gain from deep and meaningful collaboration and exchange.

IARU Presidents’ Meeting 2011
The sixth annual Presidents’ Meeting was held on 6 & 7 April at the Yale Club. It was a very fruitful meeting, and many ideas and perspectives on the latest developments and critical issues facing higher education were discussed and exchanged. University presidents from Yale, ANU, ETH Zurich, NUS, Beida, Copenhagen and Oxford were present at this meeting.
President Tan Chorh Chuan (NUS) was re-elected as IARU Chair for a second two-year term. His first term began in April 2009, taking over from IARU Founding Chair, Prof Ian Chubb (ANU) who also served two terms from 2005. Under both Chairmen, IARU has embarked on more than 20 jointly organized activities ranging from the creation of networks between specific departments (including Provosts, Research VPs, Alumni and Human Resources) to collaborations in globally oriented educational programs, and a shared “grand challenge” on the issue of campus sustainability. At this meeting, Presidents welcomed Professor Ian Young who succeeds Professor Ian Chubb as Vice Chancellor of ANU (more about ANU’s Vice Chancellor).
