Course Description

Since 1949, the new China has undertaken quite a transformation from the original central-planning system to the current socialism market economy. Now, China has become a major topic of discussion among ordinary people in daily life.

This course is designed to give students an overview of various aspects of the transformation process beginning in 1978, including the cultural and political background. The personal role of Deng Xiaoping is emphasized in the early stage of the process. The course tells a vivid story about how the country has moved to the current stage, and what kind of daunting challenges the country is facing in the 21 century.

Target Audience

Undergraduate IARU students in an economics or business major

Delivery Method

The course will be delivered by lectures and panel discussions, workshops, and group debates. The course runs from July 5 to July 27, and will include 8 hours of class time per week. For the days involving no teaching, students will carry out research project assignments studying either individually or with the group for about 2 hours work per day.

  • Participation in class activities 10%
  • Workshop project and presentation 30%
  • 1 research essay of 2000 words 35%
  • Debate 25%

Accommodation

Zhongguanyuan Global Village, Peking University is located to the east gate of the main campus and within walking distance. It is a comprehensive village integrated with services such as accommodation, catering, conferences, teaching, sports, and recreation, providing professional services such as over 1,000sq.m of dining space and nearly 3,000sq.m of recreational facilities. All rooms are air-conditioned with king-size bed. Utility fee is within the rate. Internet fee is not included, which is RMB 90 per month.

In addition, there are also post offices, supermarkets, book bars, coffee houses and other facilities available in the village. The region surrounding Zhongguanyuan Global Village PKU, is convenient to public transport, with dozens of bus lines running through the area, and you can also take the subway No.4 line directly to the village.

Includes tuition fee for Comparative Philosophy: China and the West and an optional Chinese language course. Please note that students wishing to take only the Economic System Reform in China course will be charged the same packaged tuition fee (RMB 10,000)
