The Oxford Seminar in Global Leadership will offer GSP students the opportunity to explore the most urgent challenges and opportunities for humanity in the 21st century.
Students will have tutorials and seminars with research faculty and staff from the Oxford University James Martin 21st Century School. This is a unique collaborative research institution which seeks to develop strategies for responding to the most serious problems and most promising opportunities for the world in the twenty-first century. The School currently comprises fifteen research institutes, focusing on such topics as bioethics, nanotechnology, pandemics, ageing, climate change, and stem cell science, among others.

In groups of three of four, the GSP students will prepare a project for presentation in the final week. Topics for the projects are likely to include:
Students will also attend lectures offered through the Oxford University Summer School in History Politics and Society (HPS). They will also take an HPS course on political and social aspects of the contemporary world, choosing one from the following three topics.
Student will have completed at least 2 years study at university undergraduate level.
Students who are not native speakers of English need to have minimum English language skills equal to IELTS 6.5 / CAE “C” / TOEIC 800 / or TOEFL scores of 250 (computer-based TOEFL), 100 (internet-based TOEFL), 600 (paper-based TOEFL).
Seminars – 5 sessions led by researchers from the James Martin 21st Century School @ 1.5 hrs = 7.5 hrs
Tutorials – 3 sessions in pairs or threes, for which each student prepares a 1,500-word essay, discusses the content with the tutor and co-tutees, and submits the essay for marking and return by the tutor.
3 tutorials @ 1 hr = 3.0 hrs
Project - preparation in small groups with guidance from the tutor. Presentations of all the group’s projects – minimum of 5 @ 45 mins = 3.75 hrs
HPS Course – 6 taught sessions for a group of usually 8 – 12 participants. Students read in preparation for each class meeting and prepare a 2,000-word essay for submission in the third week.
6 classes @ 2 hrs – 12 hrs
HPS Lectures – Lectures are given by specialists drawn both from Oxford University and more widely; each lecture is followed by the opportunity for questions from the audience. These are given Monday – Friday of Weeks 1 - 3. 15 lecture sessions @ 1.5 hrs = 22.5 hrs

Accommodation will be offered in Exeter College, which is one of the University’s oldest colleges and which is situated in the centre of Oxford. Participants will have a single study-bedroom; bedrooms are in buildings with up to nine floors and accessed by stairs only. Toilets and bath and/or shower facilities on each staircase are shared.
Meals are provided in the college dining Hall. The first meal is dinner on Sunday 4 July and the last is breakfast on Friday 30 July. No lunches are provided at weekends.
