Southeast Asia in Context

23 June – 25 July 2008
National University of Singapore

Location: NUS Campus in Singapore, Thailand (Bangkok, Suphanburi and Khon Kaen), Cambodia (Angkor Wat)

Notes: the programme is open to undergraduates only. There will only be 5 places available in 2008.

Course Description

This course examines Southeast Asia in the contexts of both an academic understanding of the region, and of being in the region itself as it is studied. The course blends classroom lectures with field-study excursions to sites in Singapore, Thailand and Cambodia. The fieldwork is intended to develop research skills, as well as reinforce materials from the classes. Every student in the class will take one module introducing the region and the interdisciplinary study of it. Students will also select a second, more specialised module, the choice being between an anthroplogical and a historical perspective. By the end of the course, students will have seen parts of the region, learnt to look at them in more informed and critical ways, as well as having read quite widely in history, geography, politics and anthropology.

Course tuition fee: SGD 2700
Field-study costs: SGD 2000
Accommodation fee: Approx. SGD 400
