PKU3 - The Global Images of China
15 July 2019 – 26 July 2019
Hosted by Peking University
The objective of the course is to examine global images of China in various images and written documents from the time of the Silk Road to the present of Belt and Road. Advanced undergraduates and graduate students will help to explore how others viewed China, in ancient times this was largely a matter of Europe. How did early Italian, Portuguese, Spanish and other travelers, explorers, officials and others represent China? In recent times, how did writers, scholars, politicians, media creators and others represent images of China? Images are not necessarily realities and representations can also be misrepresentations. These images become crucial in our understanding of how the world imagines and represents China in images.
